Waldschmidt Delivers Arizona's Moment of the Week

Ryan Waldschmidt didn't just win a game — he made history for a franchise. The Kentucky-bred center fielder launched a walk-off two-run homer against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, Aug. 26, delivering Arizona its MLB-leading 40th comeback victory of the season. The Diamondbacks trailed 4-3 heading into the final frame before Waldschmidt ended it, punctuating the night with a swing that vaulted Arizona further into the NL wild-card picture.

The performance was particularly meaningful given Arizona was already playing shorthanded — without Ketel Marte in the lineup, the D-backs leaned on contributions from throughout the roster, and Waldschmidt answered loudest. He finished the week with a hit on Saturday against the Giants as well, closing the period batting .271. Across the week's action, he finished with 2 RBIs on the walk-off homer alone.

Merrill Keeps Raking in San Diego

While Waldschmidt was providing the dramatics in Arizona, Jackson Merrill was doing what he's done all season in San Diego: hit. The Padres outfielder was a consistent force at the plate throughout the week, logging multiple multi-hit performances across a stretch that helped keep San Diego in the thick of the NL playoff race.

On Sunday, Aug. 23, Merrill went 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBIs, and a walk in a 7-5 Padres win over the Twins. He followed that up Wednesday against Pittsburgh with another two-hit outing — adding an RBI and a run scored in a 3-0 blanking of the Pirates. Then on Friday, he delivered again: 2 hits, a home run, 2 RBIs, and 2 runs scored against the Rays. Merrill closed the week batting .239, a number that undersells the quality of contact he's been making.

The Padres have needed every bit of it. San Diego is firmly in the NL wild-card conversation, and Merrill's consistency in the outfield — both at the plate and with the glove — has been central to their push.

Ritter Gets His Shot in Colorado

Ryan Ritter's week had a quieter but notable storyline: the Rockies recalled the shortstop from Triple-A during the period, and he made the most of his opportunity. With Ezequiel Tovar exiting a game against the Nationals with a left wrist strain, Ritter stepped in at shortstop in the sixth inning — a reminder that his path to playing time runs directly through the injury report. He also recorded a hit and scored a run on Wednesday in that same series against Washington. He's batting .200 on the season and working to hold his roster spot.

The Padres center fielder quietly reached his 500th plate appearance of the season, unlocking a $5 million bonus baked into his nine-figure contract with San Diego. It's the kind of incentive clause that only matters if you stay healthy and productive enough to reach it — and Merrill did exactly that.

The payout reflects just how significant a bet the Padres made on Merrill. Built into a landmark deal, the plate appearance threshold was a simple but meaningful benchmark, and Merrill cleared it during a week in which he appeared in four games (Aug. 16–22), posting hits on Sunday against Cleveland and Monday against the Mets while holding a .238–.244 batting average range across the stretch. The Padres beat the Twins 6-2 on Saturday to close the week, with Merrill in the lineup.

The financial news overshadows what has otherwise been a quietly steady, if unspectacular, offensive stretch for Merrill — but the bigger picture is that he's durable, present, and now $5 million richer for it.

Rogers and Waldschmidt Turn in Solid Weeks

Two other Kentucky alums had notable showings during the period.

Taylor Rogers, working out of the Twins bullpen, made three appearances between Aug. 16 and Aug. 22, pitching a combined 2.2 innings. The veteran lefty's ERA ticked down from 5.0 to 4.82 over the week, a modest but positive trend. His most complete outings came Sunday against the Phillies (1.0 IP) and Saturday against the Padres (1.0 IP, 2 strikeouts). In a pennant-race context, a reliable late-inning arm is exactly what Minnesota needs — Rogers is logging innings and limiting damage.

Ryan Waldschmidt, the Diamondbacks outfielder, was arguably the week's most productive position player outside of Merrill's headline. The Kentucky product went 4-for-his-series across three games against the Red Sox (Aug. 17–19), driving in runs in two of those contests and drawing multiple walks. He capped the week Saturday against Cincinnati with a hit, an RBI, and a walk, bumping his average to .280. Waldschmidt has quietly built a solid case as one of the more underrated Kentucky products currently on a big-league roster.

Luke Maile appeared in two games for the Royals (Aug. 16, Aug. 20), checking in at a .200–.238 average range over the week. The veteran catcher continues to provide steady depth behind the plate for Kansas City.
