Oregon Ducks in the WNBA | Week of Aug. 23–29

Six straight playoff appearances. That's the milestone New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu and her teammates punched in during a week that was equal parts drama, rivalry theater, and a sobering loss to the league's hottest team.

Ionescu at the Center of Everything

The biggest moment of Ionescu's week came Saturday, Aug. 23, when the Liberty hosted the Indiana Fever in front of 17,500 fans at Barclays Center — many of whom had traveled coast to coast for a glimpse of Caitlin Clark. It didn't go the way the Fever faithful had hoped. New York won the high-scoring affair, and Ionescu made sure to notice the crowd's shift in energy. New York rebounded Saturday, Aug. 29, topping the Chicago Sky 85–66. Ionescu's scoring line was modest (2 points, 4 assists, 5 rebounds), but she stayed a plus-9 and the Liberty got the job done. Anneli Maley, the other Oregon alumna suiting up for New York, logged minutes in the win as well, finishing at minus-1.

With playoff seeding still in flux heading into the final stretch, the Liberty's bracket positioning is one of the WNBA's most-watched storylines — and Ionescu remains the fulcrum around which that conversation revolves.

Winterburn Producing Across the Pond

Across the league, Holly Winterburn (Chicago Fire) had her best statistical showing of the period on Friday, Aug. 28, posting 11 points, 2 assists, 2 rebounds, a steal, and a block in a Fire loss to the Dream. It was a bright individual showing in an otherwise difficult stretch for Chicago, which also dropped games to the Wings on Aug. 26 and the Mystics on Aug. 23.

Nyara Sabally: Limited Availability

Nyara Sabally suited up for the Golden State Tempo in both of her team's games this week — a loss to the Storm (78–90) on Aug. 27 and a loss to the Aces (78–88) on Aug. 23 — but no individual statistics were available for either outing.

The bigger picture for Oregon alumni this week is unmistakably Ionescu-shaped. With the postseason approaching, the question isn't whether she'll be on the playoff stage — it's how high the Liberty can climb before they get there, and whether a Valkyries rematch awaits. For Duck fans, that's must-watch television.

The Oregon Ducks' WNBA footprint was impossible to ignore this week — and not always for the right reasons. Sabrina Ionescu delivered one of the more quietly spectacular performances of her season, but the bigger story around the Duck alumni pool is a troubling wave of injuries threatening to reshape the postseason outlook.

Ionescu Carries the Liberty — Again

Tuesday's 93-86 loss to the Chicago Sky shouldn't overshadow what Ionescu did: 18 points, 12 assists, and 7 rebounds — a near triple-double that would headline any winning effort. She also chipped in a steal and a block, finishing a plus-4 in a game the Liberty ultimately couldn't close. The performance came amid genuine roster chaos; the Liberty were already missing Satou Sabally due to a concussion, and the night got worse when Jonquel Jones exited with an ankle injury.

Come Saturday, Ionescu was cleared to play against Indiana despite lingering injury concerns. The results were more modest — 12 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds in a 109-102 Liberty win — but New York got the win it needed with the playoff picture tightening. Her value to this team in crisis mode has been undeniable.

The Sabally Sisters, Both Sidelined

The week delivered a stark contrast for the two Sabally sisters, and neither storyline was good news.

Satou Sabally remained out indefinitely for the Liberty, sidelined with what the team described as lingering concussion issues — her second head injury in the span of a year. Breanna Stewart didn't hide the difficulty of the situation, acknowledging openly that losing Satou on top of other injuries has tested the roster in a meaningful way. With New York still pushing toward a playoff berth, her absence looms large.

Nyara Sabally, meanwhile, didn't log a single minute across three Tempo appearances this week — Toronto's games against Indiana (Aug. 18), Washington (Aug. 19), and Chicago (Aug. 22). The Tempo listed her among four starters unavailable for the Mystics loss, a defeat that officially eliminated Toronto from playoff contention. The expansion team has now lost 12 straight and sits at 10-25. It's been a brutal debut season for the franchise, and Nyara's extended absence has only compounded the pain.

Holly Winterburn and the Supporting Cast

Over in the WNBA's international market, Holly Winterburn logged back-to-back appearances for the Fire. She had 4 points and an assist in Saturday's tight road loss to Toronto — though her minus-14 plus-minus told a rougher story about her minutes — and 2 points in Sunday's 88-85 win over the Mercury to open the week. Fellow Duck Anneli Maley saw brief action for the Liberty against Chicago on Wednesday, pulling down a rebound and recording a steal in limited time.

The Big Picture

Three Ducks — Ionescu, Satou Sabally, and Nyara Sabally — were woven into two of the week's biggest WNBA narratives: the Liberty's injury crisis and the Tempo's unceremonious playoff exit. Ionescu is doing everything in her power to keep New York afloat. Whether the Sabally sisters can return in time to matter — for the Liberty's playoff run or otherwise — remains the question hanging over Oregon's WNBA week.

Sabrina Ionescu had one of the most bittersweet weeks in her WNBA career. The Oregon alum etched her name into the record books, led the New York Liberty through back-to-back wins, debuted limited-edition sneakers — and then got cut from Team USA's FIBA World Cup roster before the week was out.

Record-Setter in New York

Ionescu made WNBA history on Monday, Aug. 3, dishing out five assists against the Seattle Storm to claim the league's all-time assists record. The milestone came in a 95-83 Liberty win in which she also added 18 points and two rebounds as New York's superstar trio — Ionescu, Breanna Stewart, and Jonquel Jones — asserted control early and never let go.

Two days later on Wednesday, Aug. 5, Ionescu kept rolling in a rematch with Seattle, posting 15 points, six assists, five rebounds, and two steals in a 92-86 Liberty victory. The Liberty have now won five of their last six games, and Ionescu has been the engine running the offense throughout that stretch.

That's not all that turned heads. On Saturday, Aug. 2 — the weekend before the Storm series — Ionescu dropped 27 points with a season-high 10 assists and seven rebounds, engineering a comeback from 10 points down in the third quarter to beat the Phoenix Mercury 94-92. She also debuted her Nike Sabrina 4 "Slurpee" shoes during that game, a 7-Eleven-inspired colorway that made as much noise on social media as the final buzzer did.

The Snub

Then came the gut punch. Ionescu was left off the Team USA roster for the 2026 FIBA Women's World Cup — a roster that reflected the league's generational handoff toward Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers, and their peers. Ionescu, one of the most decorated guards in WNBA history and fresh off breaking the all-time assists record, publicly expressed disappointment at the omission. The optics couldn't have been more jarring: history-maker one day, roster cut the next.

Ionescu Wasn't the Only Duck Busy This Week

Fellow Oregon alum Nyara Sabally had a productive if frustrating stretch with the Atlanta Tempo. The forward posted three consecutive multi-stat performances — 19 points and eight rebounds in a loss to the Valkyries on Aug. 3, 22 points and six boards in another Valkyries loss on Aug. 5, and 17 points with five rebounds in an 83-93 home loss to the Fire on Aug. 7. Sabally is clearly producing; her Tempo squad just isn't winning around her.

Holly Winterburn, the British guard playing for the Fire, bookended the week with modest contributions: four points and two assists in a loss to the Sparks on Aug. 2, and another four-point, two-assist performance in the victory over the Tempo on Aug. 7. The wins are there for Winterburn's Fire — the same can't be said for Sabally's Tempo.

The Bigger Picture

Ionescu's week encapsulates everything complicated about being a star athlete at the peak of her powers during a moment of generational transition. The records, the wins, the signature sneaker moment — and still, a Team USA door closed. For Oregon fans, the frustration is real, but so is the pride. The Duck who changed the game in Eugene is now changing it in New York, whether the national team selectors are watching or not.
