Brenton Doyle is taking his Shepherd University education all the way to the MLB Playoffs — and doing it in style.

The Chicago White Sox center fielder delivered one of the signature moments of the early postseason, robbing Cleveland Guardians hitter Patrick Bailey with a leaping catch at the wall to seal a Game 2 victory. It was the kind of play that ends highlight reels and shifts series momentum — and it came courtesy of a product of Shepherdstown, WV.

The catch capped a 5-9 White Sox win in Game 2 on October 9, with Doyle also contributing offensively, logging a hit and an RBI on the night to go with his glove work. His batting average climbed to .222 on the series after a quiet Game 1 — a 4-3 Chicago win on October 5 — where he hit just .167.

The numbers won't turn heads, but the moment will. In a short playoff series, one play at the wall can loom larger than a week of at-bats, and Doyle delivered exactly that. The Shepherd University alum — acquired via trade earlier this season — capped a strong week with a home run and multi-hit performance against Colorado on Saturday, capping back-to-back multi-hit, multi-base-knock showings that have Chicago brass feeling better about the deal they made to bring him in.

Doyle's best moments of the week came Tuesday (Sept. 22) and Saturday (Sept. 26) against Kansas City and Colorado, respectively. In the 14-11 slugfest against the Royals, he went 2-for-the-night with a home run, an RBI, and two runs scored. Four days later, he kept the momentum going against Colorado — one hit, one homer, one RBI, one run — a nearly identical stat line that underscored just how locked-in he's been at the plate.

Those two performances bookended a quieter middle stretch — he didn't register a hit on Friday against Colorado or Thursday against Kansas City — but the power and plate presence in his productive games have been hard to ignore. His average climbed to .233 on the back of those outbursts, a modest number that doesn't fully capture what his bat has meant in context.

For a White Sox team that has had precious little to celebrate in 2026, Doyle's surge offers a late-season reason to watch. Sports Illustrated noted that the trade for the center fielder is "looking better" precisely because of this kind of offensive consistency — a player finding his footing at the right moment, even if the standings no longer matter much for Chicago.

For Shepherd fans, the arc is worth appreciating. Doyle came out of a small Division II program in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, and has carved out a legitimate big-league role.
